Maricopa The Best Care in the City

At MIHS, this teamwork approach is the backbone for medical decision making and the department of radiology is no exception.  Our emphasis on the team approach culminates in providing exceptional patient care while promoting research and medical education.  Our radiology staff places a priority on resident and medical student education.

Welcome to the Creighton School of Medicine – Phoenix radiology residency website. Radiology represents an extremely exciting and challenging medical subspecialty.  It is the practice of radiology that brings primary and subspecialty care together utilizing a multidisciplinary approach to provide the highest level of medical care.

At Creighton, this teamwork approach is the backbone for medical decision making and the department of radiology is no exception.  Our emphasis on the team approach culminates in providing exceptional patient care while promoting research and medical education.  Our radiology staff places a priority on resident and medical student education.

One question frequently comes up from prospective residents: What kind of residents do you have here at Creighton – Phoenix?  The answer is simple.  Our residents are extremely intelligent, hard working self-starters with great communication skills.  They impress me every single day.  I consider it a privilege to work with them.

The future of radiology may be cloudy with capitation/alternative payment models, changes in ACGME, and challenges in research grant funding.  The best response to these uncertainties is clear – establish a high quality team and provide the best patient care, academics, and research that you possibly can.

Are you ready for the challenge?

Mary Connell, MD Word from the Program Director

These are exciting times for Maricopa Diagnostic Radiology residency!  This year (2018) we graduated our 10thclass of Board Eligible radiologists, sending them to fellowships and beyond.  We have worked very hard to ensure our relatively young program provides a robust well-rounded training experience, equipping our grads with broad, deep skill sets that enable them to succeed in their chosen areas of expertise.  At this writing, Maricopa has graduated 25 diagnostic radiologists. Nearly all have done (or are currently completing) fellowships.  About a quarter are in practice in the Valley; the remainder are working in private practices and academic programs throughout the US.

The second decade of our training program promises to take radiology training in Arizona to the next level, with the merging of the Maricopa DR residency with that of our sister program at St. Joseph’s Hospital, under the Creighton College of Medicine Alliance.   The dynamic of combining a 40+ year old established training program at a large private practice hospital, with a smaller, much younger residency in a safety-net hospital – with additional training at the Phoenix VA, Phoenix Children’s, and U of A Cancer Hospital — offers an extensive variety of training experiences.  The history between our two programs goes deep – many of our own faculty are graduates from the St. Joe’s program, and friendships and collaboration pre-date the merger.  As the process continues, program leadership at both sites are working feverishly to identify and merge the best practices that each site has to offer.

As of fall, 2018, most conferences between the two sites are now shared.  Grand rounds have been combined since the preceding academic year. The cohesion of rotation schedules will be implemented in a step-wise fashion and was begun this current academic year with sharing of several of the PGY-2 rotations.  As the progressive merging of programs continues, all hands are on deck for identifying the best practices in resident education, to make the ultimate combined program the strongest in Arizona, and a stand-out in training opportunities in the Southwest.  Of note, the next chapter will very likely include residency positions in Interventional Radiology, which will be offered in the next Match cycle.

As you consider your choices for a training site in either Diagnostic or Interventional Radiology, we hope our University training program, with a wide array of training sites, in sunny Arizona will make your list of programs to consider.

Of note, if/when you choose to investigate the Diagnostic Radiology residency programs at Maricopa and St. Joseph’s, these programs now are listed on the ERAS website as training sites under Creighton University Alliance.
